PORT ANGELES — A fire that leveled a double-wide mobile home east of Port Angeles on Tuesday night flared up briefly Wednesday afternoon.
No one was injured in either blaze at 2023 E. Fourth Ave. in the Gales Addition district, but about five cars and at least two motorcycles burned.
Investigators have not determined the cause of the fire or an estimate on the damage, said Clallam County Fire District No. 2 Chief Jon Bugher.
The owner, Fred Williams, did not have insurance. The Red Cross was notified of his situation, Bugher said.
When firefighters arrived shortly before 10 p.m. Tuesday night , the 24-foot by 40-foot residence was being consumed by the fire, according to a statement from the district.
Bugher said that because the homeowner did not have insurance — which usually pays for a full investigation — and because the floor of the burned out structure was too unstable for firefighters to attempt to lift the charred, warped roof from the wreckage beneath, Bugher said the exact cause may not be known.
In addition to toxic smoke from burning chemicals and vehicle components, firefighters concerned themselves with protecting neighboring structures, the statement said.
On Wednesday afternoon, firefighters were summoned back to the smoldering ruins when a fragment of a single-wide trailer behind the main residence reignited.
