Fire east of Port Angeles destroys garage, damages nearby homes

PORT ANGELES — Flames burned a garage to the ground at 82 Marsden Road, melted vinyl siding on a nearby home and cracked windows on another adjacent house this morning before Clallam Fire District 2 extinguished the flames.

Firefighters reported no injuries from the fire east of Port Angeles.

Mount Pleasant Road, which provides access to Marsden Road, was closed for about 90 minutes as firefighters ran a water-supply line 800 feet to the scene and Clallam County Sheriff’s deputies redirected traffic.

District 2 Chief Sam Phillips said initial reports from neighbors at 6:09 a.m. cited explosions that probably were caused by compressed air containers, aerosol cans and containers of petroleum in the garage.

Firefighters rescued vehicles from the vicinity of the garage but not before flames had scorched a 1995 Ford F250 pickup truck and damaged neighboring homes.

They extinguished the fire in 20 minutes, Phillips said.

They could not save the garage or its contents, which that included equipment for two workshops, a riding mower, motorcycle, bicycles, housewares, beds, a pressure washer, washer-dryer, hand and power tools, a refrigerator, weight bench and jack stands.

The items were owned by Marvin and Amanda Nelson, who rented it from Margaret Pagano, owner of one of the damaged houses, Phillips said.

Pagano and the Nelsons told investigators they have homeowner’s and tenant’s insurance.

Philips made no estimate of the losses to the structures or contents.

District 2 Fire-Rescue responded with two fire engines, a water tender, a medic unit, a command vehicle and 14 firefighters.
