Fire destroys Port Angeles mobile home

PORT ANGELES — A fire Sunday night destroyed a singlewide trailer which was home to a Port Angeles couple.

Firefighters arrived at the home at 301 Mount Pleasant Road at about 7:30 p.m. and finished extinguishing the fire at about 11 p.m., said Jon Bugher, fire chief of Clallam County Fire District No. 2.

The couple, Clyde and Ingrid Lee, were folding laundry in one of the bedrooms when they smelled smoke, Bugher said.

When they opened the door and saw more smoke, they ran to the front door and called the Fire Department.

Extensive heat, smoke and water damage was found throughout the structure , he said.

In addition, the blaze burned through the living room floor and burned some of the outer walls, leaving the inside exposed.

The 14-by-40-foot trailer was a total loss, Bugher said.

Bugher said that preliminary investigations indicate that the fire began in the living room.

He said that the cause of the fire was still under investigation and that Clallam County Sheriff’s Office would take over the investigation.

The couple was renting from the owner Robert Hoyle of Port Angeles.

No one was inside when firefighters arrived, and no one was injured or had to be transported to the hospital.

The Lees declined aid from the Red Cross for now and were staying with some friends or family.

Bugher said that it didn’t appear that there were any working smoke detectors in the home.

The structure was insured, but the renters didn’t have renters insurance, Bugher said.
