PORT TOWNSEND — An unidentified elderly woman suffered minor injuries in a fire that heavily damaged her Kala Point home Wednesday afternoon, firefighters said.
When firefighters arrived the woman was safe and in her neighbor’s home across the street from the fire, according to Bill Beezley of East Jefferson Fire Rescue.
Beezley said the woman was believed to be 100 years old.
She was the only occupant of the home in the 70 block of Oak Shore Drive in Kala Point.
She sustained burns to her forearms and possible smoke inhalation and was taken to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend for evaluation and treatment.
The fire department does not identify people it helps because of privacy concerns.
The woman’s neighbors called in the fire at 2:50 p.m. Wednesday after noticing smoke coming from the home in the 70 block of Oak Shore Drive in Kala Point.
Firefighters were able to put out the blaze within 20 minutes of arriving, but it already caused significant damage to the home, Beezley said.
The American Red Cross was contacted by first responders and asked to find housing for the woman.
As of late Wednesday afternoon, the cause of the blaze was unknown.
The Jefferson County Fire Investigation Task Force was on the scene and preparing to investigate.
Units from East Jefferson Fire Rescue, Port Ludlow Fire Rescue and Naval Magazine Indian Island all assisted at the fire.
