PORT ANGELES — A candle sparked a fire that charred the upstairs of a two-story home west of Port Angeles on Friday afternoon, firefighters said.
The fire reported at 2 p.m. was started by candle in an upstairs bedroom after a child had an “accident” with it, said Deputy Chief Mike Oakes of Clallam County Fire District 2 in a memo.
The family of home-owner Vera Charles evacuated safely from the wooden structure at 121 N. S’Klallam Drive on the Lower Elwha Klallam reservation, Oakes said.
When firefighters arrived, flames were erupting from an upstairs window. Firefighters fought flames and heavy smoke.
Several oxygen tanks were in the lower floor of the home, where only minor damage was reported after firefighters extinguished the flames and ventilated the home.
No damage estimate was available Saturday morning.
