JOYCE — Smoke billowed above Lake Crescent and east toward Port Angeles on Saturday evening as a forest fire burned on a slope north of the lake.
Fire crews from the state Department of Natural Resources, Olympic National Park, and Clallam County Fire Districts Nos. 2 and 4 were dispatched to the blaze Saturday late afternoon.
A DNR dispatcher said the five-acre fire was in a clearcut area.
Initial reports indicate the fire was burning west of Joyce-Piedmont Road about one mile outside of the Olympic National Park boundary.
No houses or structures were threatened by the blaze.
A resident of Lake Crescent said helicopters were scooping water from the lake and dropping it on the blaze.
DNR and county officials last week elevated the fire risk hazard to “high”‘ because of increasing dry conditions.
