PORT ANGELES — A fire in the basement of the Madrona Children’s Academy pre-school was extinguished quickly on Friday morning, with all teachers and 18 children safely evacuated, the Port Angeles Fire Department said.
Firefighters were called to the wood-framed school on West Eighth Street at 8:27 a.m. They saw smoke coming from the door leading into the basement and found that the fire was contained to a small bathroom.
The blaze was extinguished quickly, the fire department said. No one was hurt. The cause is under investigation.
Teachers and students “made it out safely thanks to early detection from smoke detectors, fire alarm system and a staff that had an emergency plan that was executed flawlessly,” according to the fire department’s press release.
Port Angeles police closed off the street and provided a safe zone for crews and the staff and students.
Engine 11 and Ladder 11 responded with five personnel as well as Chief 1102 and Chief 1103. Firefighters searched all floors and the structure was ventilated with fans to remove any remaining smoke.
