Film on Citizens United decision to be shown in Port Townsend

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Chimacum Grange, 9572 Rhody Drive.

PORT TOWNSEND — Jefferson County Move to Amend will host a free showing of “The Best Democracy Money Can Buy” this Wednesday.

The film will be shown at 7 p.m. at the Chimacum Grange, 9572 Rhody Drive. A discussion on Initiative 735 will follow the movie.

Jefferson County Move to Amend is one of several organizations that collected more than 337,000 signatures statewide to qualify I-735 for the Nov. 8 general election ballot.

If successful, the initiative will put the voters of Washington state on record as wanting Congress to propose an amendment to the U.S. Constitution that would overturn the 2010 decision by the Supreme Court in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Commission.

Seventeen states have already submitted such proposals to Congress.

In the decision, the Supreme Court overturned the ban on corporations spending money on independent expenditures or financing electioneering communications for political candidates.

“Whether you vote conservative, liberal or are too disillusioned to vote at all, this feature documentary by investigative journalist Greg Palast is a must-see,” said Dianne Diamond of Port Townsend, a volunteer for I-735.

Diamond said she has worked on the issue for more than four years and that she obtained signatures from a wide political spectrum.

“Ordinary voters are concerned with the influence of money in elections and the use of that money to push legislation that favors the wealthy and powerful at the expense of average citizens and the environment,” she said in a news release.

“Many people do not realize that seven of our 27 amendments to the Constitution were proposed and passed in opposition of unpopular Supreme Court decisions,” she added.

For more information, phone Diamond at 360-385-2341.
