Film about suicide to be screened free on Saturday

PORT TOWNSEND — “The S Word,” a film about suicide, will be screened free at noon Saturday.

The documentary, which follows people who have attempted to take their own lives and survived to tell their stories of loneliness and depression, will be at the Rose Theatre, 235 Taylor St.

Port Townsend High School junior Callay Boire-Shedd chose suicide prevention as her senior class project that began with a screening at Port Townsend High School recently of “The S Word,” which was shown at last year’s Port Townsend Film Festival.

Following the film, a SKYPE session with director Lisa Klein is planned.

Rocky Friedman, owner of the Rose Theatre, donated his theater for the film.

“I, as well as the rest of the audience, was impacted by this film,” Friedman said. “I told the filmmakers that I wanted to have the film back for another screening and told them the theater is yours. I’ll donate it to you.”

While the film is free, donations for the Benji Project will be accepted, a nonprofit organization that helps teens navigate their emotional ups and downs during adolescence and offers scholarships and programs.

The program was started by Benji Kenworthy’s mother, dedicated to her son’s memory.

Boire-Shedd knew Benji, who committed suicide in May 2015 at the age of 15.

“Benji was a very close friend of mine,” she said.

A trailer for the film is available on the film’s website at www.theswordmovie.com.
