Jefferson County law enforcement officials haven”t noticed gasoline theft to be a problem.
“We haven’t had any reported to us,” said Jefferson County Undersheriff Tim Perry.
“Either they’re not reporting it or they don’t know they’ve been ripped off,” Perry said.
He said he occasionally hears through the grapevine that gasoline has been stolen, but people haven’t been reporting the thefts if it is the case.
He said it’s been months since the Sheriff’s Office has had a report of stolen gasoline.
Port Townsend Police Sgt. Joe Kaare echoed Perry’s conclusions.
“It’s not been a rash,” Kaare said.
“It’s not anything that’s gotten above the norm.”
He said he didn’t know exactly how many have been reported recently, but whatever the case, the number is very small.
Even though the problem doesn’t appear to be hitting Jefferson County at the moment, Perry believes it could be only a matter of time.
“If the prices keep going up, we could start seeing it,” he said.
