PORT ANGELES — The second time may be the charm.
A meeting to plan a fundraising campaign to create an off-leash dog area at Lincoln Park ended early Tuesday evening due to a lower-than-expected turnout.
Six people attended the meeting at the Vern Burton Community Center that lasted about 20 minutes.
They agreed to reschedule the meeting, hoping more people will attend. Up to 10 additional people were expected to participate Tuesday.
Richard Bonine, city of Port Angeles deputy recreation director, said Wednesday that another meeting has been scheduled for 6 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 3, at the Port Angeles Senior Center, 328 E. Seventh St.
The small turnout was attributed to President Barack Obama’s State of the Union address and miscommunication over who was going to notify people known to be interested in the project.
Between $40,000 and $45,000 needs to be raised to build the three-quarter-acre dog park east of the BMX track and cover maintenance costs for three years.
The Port Angeles Rotary Club and Port Angeles Nor’wester Rotary Club have agreed to lead the fundraising effort.
Those in attendance were Bonine; Steve Zenovic of the Nor’wester Rotary Club; two representatives of Port Angeles BMX; Port Angeles Parks, Recreation and Beautification Commission Chairman Fowler Stratton; and a dog owner.
