Ferguson will talk about freedom of speech in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — State Attorney General Bob Ferguson will give his views on “Free Speech, Free Press, Free Society” from 5:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. Tuesday at Peninsula College Little Theater.

The lecture will be open to the public at the Little Theater on the Port Angeles campus of Peninsula College at 1502 E. Lauridsen Blvd.

Donations will be accepted at the door and in advance, with a suggested donation of $10 general admission; $5 for students.

The fundraiser is sponsored by the Clallam-Jefferson Pro Bono Lawyers, which provides civil legal services for low-income people dealing with family violence, scams, evictions, lack of access to health care and other issues.

Volunteer lawyers host drop-in clinics and offer one-on-one advice and consultations without charge.

Complimentary snacks and refreshments will be provided by Clallam-Jefferson County Pro Bono Lawyers.

Ferguson remarks follow the American Bar Association’s theme for Law Day this year.

Ferguson, named by Time Magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of 2017, successfully blocked President Trump’s first executive order barring travel from seven Muslim- majority nations. The order had left thousands of travelers entering the U.S. lawfully, stranded at airports and other ports of entry.

Ferguson also won a major lawsuit against the Grocery Manufacturer’s Association, an association of large corporations that attempted to shield the source of contributions to an initiative campaign.

He created the Counsel for Environmental Protection and the Office of Military and Veteran Legal Assistance — which helps current and former service members find pro bono legal assistance — within the Attorney General’s Office.

He filed a consumer protection lawsuit against a Richland florist for refusing to provide flowers for a same-sex wedding.

Ferguson is a fourth-generation Washingtonian and a graduate of the University of Washington and New York University law school.

He and his wife, Colleen, have 11-year-old twins, Jack and Katie. They live in Seattle.
