EYE ON JEFFERSON: Short-term rentals before Port Townsend council

The Port Townsend City Council will conduct a public hearing before considering approval on a first reading of an ordinance related to short-term property rentals when it meets Monday.

The special business meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in council chambers at historic City Hall, 540 Water St.

Since 2006, the council has looked into revising how the city regulates short-term rentals, defined as rentals of 29 days or less. In 2016, the council referred the matter to the planning commission, which recommended changes to the municipal code. The council will make a final decision on the proposed amendments at this hearing.

During the public hearing, the council also will consider:

• Approving on first reading an ordinance related to floodplain regulation.

• Approving a resolution related to affordable housing at the city’s Cherry Street properties, which would declare the property surplus and authorize the city manager to dispose of the property.

The planning commission meeting originally scheduled for Thursday has been canceled.
