EYE ON JEFFERSON: Jefferson County commissioners to be briefed on 2020 census

City Council to hear committee updates

The three Jefferson County commissioners will hear a briefing about the 2020 census when they meet at 9 a.m. Monday.

The meeting will be in commissioners’ chambers at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

Items on the consent agenda include declaring a state of emergency regarding damage to Upper Hoh Road at milepost 8, and an agreement in support of property acquisition for the purpose of floodplain restoration and salmon recovery on the Big Quilcene River.

In the afternoon session, Department of Community Development Director Patty Charnas will provide a status update on the county’s critical areas ordinance, and County Administrator Philip Morley will highlight the 2020 state legislative session.

Port Townsend city

The Port Townsend City Council will conduct a committee workshop when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Monday.

The meeting will be in council chambers at historic City Hall, 540 Water St.

Council members will provide updates on each of the committees. They include the finance and budget committee, the housing committee, the rules committee and the transportation committee.

Council also will cover intergovernmental committees on which it has representatives.

Discussion will be about strategic alignment of committees and an indication of interest for appointment.

The city will host a community meet-and-greet with City Manager John Mauro at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will be at the Cotton Building, 607 Water St., Port Townsend

Port Townsend schools

The Port Townsend School Board will recognize National Board Certified staff when it meets at 5:30 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will be in the Gael Stuart Building, 1610 Blaine St.

Port of Port Townsend

The Port of Port Townsend will host a public meet-and-greet session with the four finalists for the executive director position when it meets Tuesday.

The event will be at 6 p.m. at the Northwest Maritime Center, 431 Water St.

The four candidates, in alphabetical order, are Eron Berg, Andy Haub, Travis Matheson and Tony Warfield.

A special meeting of the three port commissioners will be at 9:30 a.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will be an executive session only to evaluate the qualifications of applicants for public employment.

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue

East Jefferson Fire-Rescue commissioners will discuss next steps in the city of Port Townsend annexation process when they meet at 7 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will be at Station 1-5, 35 Critter Lane, Port Townsend.

Commissioners also will discuss volunteer recruitment and retention, an update to commissioner districts and a grant agreement from the Marrowstone Island Foundation.

Board of Health

The Jefferson County Board of Public Health will discuss the 2019-20 flu outbreak season when it meets at 2:30 p.m. Thursday.

The meeting will be held at the county health building, 615 Sheridan St., Port Townsend.

Board members also will cover a mumps advisory issued in Kitsap County.

New business includes a revision to the environmental public health fee policy and proposed fees for 2020, with a recommended call for a public hearing on Feb. 20.

The board also will discuss the next steps it may consider if it declares a climate change health emergency.
