EYE ON JEFFERSON: County to consider Memorial Field lighting grant application

The three Jefferson County commissioners will consider seeking a grant to replace the lighting system at Memorial Field when they meet Monday.

The commissioners’ meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in the commissioners’ meeting room in the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

Commissioners will consider a resolution authorizing submission of a grant request from the state Recreation and Conservation Office at a 1:30 p.m. briefing session.

County staff has been assembling community pledges to match a grant of up to $112,500. The aim was to gather $137,500 in pledges.

At this point, with an addition of $18,500 in county funds, the county could submit a grant application, staff said in an agenda memo.

The lighting at the field is 44 years old and in bad repair, staff said. Several lights, for which no replacements are available, have failed, and one light has fallen onto the field.

Others are in danger of falling, and staff has fenced off the base of each pole to protect the public.

Also at the afternoon session, commissioners will hear an update on Undi Road in West Jefferson County, which provides access to homes and federal trails.

A portion of a hillside that the road transverses is slumping and the road is likely to fail, staff said. It will present options to commissioners.

Commissioners plan an executive session to discuss potential litigation at 10 a.m.

Items on the consent agenda include:

■ A call for bids by 9:30 a.m. May 16 for painting the Jefferson County Transfer Station and the Moderate Risk Waste Facility in the Boat Haven.

■ An agreement to purchase a discounted sweeper in the amount of $29,162.

■ An agreement for joint use of fleet information software at no cost to the county.
