EYE ON JEFFERSON: County hearing set on draft shooting facility law

The three Jefferson County commissioners will conduct a public hearing on a proposed shooting range ordinance at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The special meeting will be at the McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden.

Commissioners invalidated the Oct. 1 public hearing on the draft Commercial Shooting Facility Ordinance, which would regulate outdoor shooting ranges, because of concerns raised about the hearings compliance with the state Open Public Meetings Act (OPMA).

Instead, verbal testimony will be taken on Wednesday.

The deadline for written comments was extended to 4:30 p.m. Friday. Comments can be addressed to P.O. Box 1220, Port Townsend, WA 98368 or e-mailed to jeffbocc@co.jefferson.wa.us. Written comments from Oct. 1 will be entered into the new hearing.

During their regular meeting at 9 a.m. Monday, commissioners will consider a letter to Washington State Ferries urging that service on the Port Townsend-Coupeville route be broadened and that the Keystone Harbor be modified or moved so that it can accommodate larger vessels.

On Monday, commissioners will meet in commissioners’ chambers at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend.

The draft letter also urges cutting ferry carbon emissions and improving multi-modal transportation options.

After taking care of the consent agenda, commissioners at 1:30 p.m. will continue their review of revisions made to the draft Comprehensive Plan Update and hear the results of a traffic study undertaken after a residents of Shine Road requested the speed limit be lowered from 35 mph to 25 mph.

At noon will be the quarterly meeting of elected officials and department directors.

Items on the consent agenda include:

• A $142,519 contract with Agate Asphalt to prep and continue improvements of the Castle Hill Complex parking lot.

• Facility use agreements with the Fort Worden Public Development Authority for McCurdy Pavilion and Fort Worden Commons.

PT City Council

The Port Townsend City Planning Commission will conduct a public hearing on proposed text amendments to city code that relate to housing when it meets at 6:30 p.m. Thursday.

The planning commission will be in council chambers at historic City Hall, 540 Water St.

The Port Townsend City Council had no meeting scheduled as of Saturday.

The planning commission will hear comments on amendments to zoning and environmental protection areas of the city code.

It also will consider adopting a water system plan to maintain compliance with state Department of Health requirements.

Other city committee meetings, which are in conference rooms at City Hall, 250 Madison St., unless otherwise noted are:

• Council Finance and Budget Committee — 3 p.m. Tuesday, council chambers, 540 Water St.

• Parks, Recreation and Trees Advisory Board — 4:30 p.m., first-floor conference room.

Port of Port Townsend

Port of Port Townsend commissioners will conduct a 2019 operating and capital budget public hearing when they meet at at 5:30 p.m. Wednesday.

The regular session will be in chambers, 333 Benedict St.

Commissioners also will consider Northwest Maritime Center floats.

Chimacum School

The Chimacum School Board will consider a plan to change facility configuration in light of declining enrollment when it meets at 6 p.m. Wednesday.

The meeting will be at Chimacum High School, 91 West Valley Road.

The superintendent will report on the long range facility plan after a tour of the facilities.

The board also will consider revisions of thigh school graduation requirements.

It will hear reports on October enrollment and finances.

Jefferson Healthcare

Jefferson Healthcare commissioners will consider appointing an independent auditor when they meet at 2 p.m. Wednesday.

The board will meet in the Victor J. Dirksen Conference Room on the first floor of 834 Sheridan St.

The commissioners also will hear a financial report and strategic plan scorecard and a recommendation from the sexual assault nurse examiner.
