EYE ON JEFFERSON: County considers Indigenous Peoples Day

The three Jefferson County commissioners will consider declaring Oct. 8 Indigenous Peoples Day when they meet at 9 a.m. Monday.

The meeting will be in commissioners’ chambers at the Jefferson County Courthouse, 1820 Jefferson St., Port Townsend. An executive session is set for 10:25 a.m. to discuss potential litigation.

Commissioners will consider declaring the day federally recognized as Indigenous Peoples Day, saying the cities of Port Townsend and Port Angeles are also doing so, in a proclamation suggested by Commissioner Kate Dean.

Commissioners are expected to set a hearing on a proposed shooting range ordinance for 5:30 p.m. Oct. 24 at McCurdy Pavilion at Fort Worden. It also is expected to extend the written public comment deadline to 4:30 p.m. Oct. 24.

The action would be taken to avoid a lawsuit claiming that the county had violated the state Open Public Meetings Act at a hearing on Oct. 1 that attracted some 330 people.

Commissioners will review draft revisions to the plan foundation, vision statement and economic development element for the Comprehensive Plan Update.

Commissioners also will consider lodging tax funding recommendations from the Lodging Tax Advisory Committee.

At 10 a.m., they will conduct a hearing on third quarter budget appropriations.

At 10:15, they will conduct a public hearing on declaring Penny Creek Pit surplus property.

Commissioners also will consider, on the consent agenda, approving the use of emergency procurement procedures to quickly repair the roof of the Brinnon Community Center.

Other items on the consent agenda include several contracts with Discovery Behavioral Health for jail inmates with substance use disorders; school children counseling of school children in Port Townsend, Chimacum and Quilcene; co-occurring disorders; and transitional housing services for those in risk of psychiatric hospitalization or who have been discharged from hospitals and do not have homes.

Also on the consent agenda are:

• Agreements with the state Department of Health.

• A $24,900 professional services agreement with Herrera Environmental Consultants for the Anderson Lake Management Plan.
