EYE ON JEFFERSON: Commissioners to eye sky lantern ban during dry periods at Monday meeting

The three Jefferson County commissioners will discuss an ordinance banning sky lanterns during dry periods at a meeting Monday.

The meeting will begin at 9 a.m. in chambers, 1820 Jefferson St.

Sky lanterns are small hot air balloons with an opening at the bottom where a small fire is suspended. The devices are lit and thrown into the air.

While they are not considered fireworks by law, they pose fire and safety hazards, as they have the ability to float to as high as 1500 feet, travel up to 20 miles from the release point and may land on combustible materials, according to the proposed resolution.

Items on the consent agenda include:

■ A resolution adopting Jefferson County’s cost allocation plan for fiscal years 2015 and 2016.

■ A resolution delegating certain job titles and responsibilities to interim Director of Community Development David Goldsmith.

■ An agreement to allocate $30,039 to Healthy Communities Programs.

■ An agreement to adjust property descriptions in the Quilcene area.
