EYE ON CLALLAM: County considers setting hearing on tax increase for housing funds

Government meetings across Clallam County.

The three Clallam County commissioners will consider setting a public hearing on an additional sales and use tax to provide funds for affordable housing during their weekly work session that will begin at 9 a.m. Monday.

HB 1590 authorizes cities and counties to impose a sales and use tax up to 1/10th of 1 percent for affordable housing. The City of Port Angeles has already passed this tax. The hearing would be conducted at 10:30 a.m. April 5.

Commissioners will conduct a business meeting at 10 a.m. Tuesday.

• Several appointments to various volunteer boards and commissions.

• Several budget revisions that will be the subject of a public hearing on Tuesday, March 29.

• Agreements with the Washington State Health Care Authority, Correctional Healthcare Companies, LLC and Olympic Peninsula Community Clinic to expand medication assisted treatment for inmates in the county jail.

• A request for five new full-time positions in Health and Human Services; these positions are funded by a new foundational public health services grant.

• An agreement with the Sequim Food Bank to provide an additional $185,950 of American Rescue Plan Act funding for personnel costs and pre-construction costs for its proposed new food storage facility.

• An agreement with the Black Diamond Water District for $65,537.28 of American Rescue Plan Act funding to align its water supply line with the new Department of Natural Resources bridge over the Little River.

• An agreement with the Department of Commerce for the county’s Department of Health and Human Services to manage a $392,000 grant for hotel leasing and rapid re-housing.

• A notice of a public hearing, to be conducted Tuesday, March 29, on the proposed new rate schedule for the county fairgrounds.

The Washington State Association of Counties will hear a weekly update on COVID-19 when they meet at noon Monday.

Both Clallam and Jefferson counties will participate.

Board of Health

The Clallam County Board of Health will conduct a public hearing on a proposed change in the board’s composition when it meets at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday.

The change would increase the board from seven to nine members, eliminate the two at-large positions and add positions for a public health care practitioner, a consumer of public health, a tribal member selected by the Indian Health Commission and one community stakeholder.
