EYE ON CLALLAM: Commissioners to consider hospital funding

The three Clallam County commissioners will consider a $60,000 expenditure from general fund reserves for medical or other emergency services at Olympic Medical Center and Forks Community Hospital on Tuesday.

The meeting will begin at 10 a.m. in the commissioners’ boardroom (160) at the Clallam County Courthouse, 223 E. Fourth St., Port Angeles.

Commissioners recently decided to spend down a portion of the county’s reserve fund in ways that help county residents.

Other Tuesday agenda items include:

■ An agreement with the Jamestown S’Klallam tribe for implementing a Sequim Bay-Dungeness pollution identification and correction plan pilot project.

■ An agreement with Jefferson County for distribution of funds for the North Pacific Coast Marine Resources Committee.

■ An agreement with the state Department of Transportation for repaving, restriping and shoulder work on LaPush Road.

■ A resolution annexing Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District No. 9 in West Jefferson County into Clallam County Fire Protection District No. 1 in Forks.

■ Notice of a May 12 hearing on a proposed ordinance creating a new chapter in the county code titled “Carlsborg Sewer System Connection Requirements.”

■ Notice of May 5 hearing on a proposed ordinance creating a code chapter titled “Integrated Roadside Weed Management.”

Commissioners will gather at 9 a.m. Monday for their weekly work session.

Discussion items include a briefing on the proposed expansion of the Feiro Marine Life Center on the Port Angeles City Pier and a recently approved sales tax reduction.

Port Angeles

Port Angeles City Council members will consider approving a $1.2 million contract with Primo Construction Inc. of Sequim for the budding waterfront development project when they meet Tuesday.

The meeting will begin at 6 p.m. at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.

This phase of the waterfront project west of Railroad Avenue and Oak Street would be completed within 75 working days. Funding is from the 2015 capital facilities budget, grants and council-allocated economic development funds.

Primo’s was the low bid from among three submitted.

The council also will consider passing a resolution allowing Councilwoman Cherie Kidd to seek grant funding for suicide-prevention barriers for the Eighth Street bridges.

They will consider approving a collective bargaining contract with members of the American Federation of State, County and Municipal Employees and approving a letter of support for Feiro Marine Life Center funding for a feasibility study on expanding the City Pier facility.

Clallam Transit

The Clallam Transit board will consider approving the purchase of three support vehicles and the acceptance of a memorandum of agreement for a regional reduced-fare permit program through the Puget Sound Regional Council when it meets Monday.

The meeting will begin at 1 p.m. at the Clallam Transit System building at 830 W. Lauridsen Blvd., Port Angeles.

Other agenda items include a letter of support to the city of Port Angeles regarding the Olympic Medical Center campus, recognition of transit operator Ed Stanard as the 2014 employee of the year and of mechanic Larry Latson as the top employee of the first quarter of 2015.

Clallam PUD

Clallam County Public Utility District commissioners will consider establishing compensation for the treasurer controller and amending the paid-time-off policy for the general manager when they meet in Sequim on Monday.

The meeting will begin at 1:30 p.m. in the Sequim Library meeting room, 630 N. Sequim Ave.

Marine resources committee

The Clallam County Marine Resources Committee will hear a Protection Island National Wildlife Refuge update from a state Department of Natural Resources official Monday.

The meeting will begin at 5:30 p.m. in the commissioners’ small meeting room at the Clallam County Courthouse.

Additional updates are scheduled for oil spill response training and a marine debris coastal cleanup in Clallam Bay and Sekiu.

Charter review

The Clallam County Charter Review Committee will hear subcommittee reports and take public comment Monday.

The meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. at the Clallam County Courthouse.

Opportunity Fund Advisory Board

The Clallam County Opportunity Fund Advisory Board will meet at 10:15 a.m. Thursday in Room 208 of the Lincoln Center, 905 W. Ninth St., Port Angeles.

The six-member board will consider the Port of Port Angeles’ application for $1 million to help build its Composite Recycling Technology Center at William R. Fairchild International Airport and recommend to Clallam County commissioners whether to grant the request.

Board of Health

Members of the Clallam County Board of Health will discuss the recent measles outbreak and lessons learned from it when they meet Tuesday.

They will meet at 1:30 p.m. in the commissioners’ boardroom (160) at the Clallam County Courthouse.

They also will discuss an outbreak of pertussis, also known as whooping cough, in Jefferson County and elsewhere in the state.

Other agenda items include recruitment of a new health officer, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation rankings of health among U.S. counties, a report on the Syringe Services Program, stabilization of erosion of the city’s shuttered 18th Street landfill/transfer station bluffs and monitoring travelers returning from countries with reported Ebola cases.

North Olympic Lead Entity for Salmon

The North Olympic Lead Entity for Salmon will hear presentations for grants when it meets Wednesday.

The group will meet from 9 a.m. to about 4 p.m. in the Raymond Carver Room of the Port Angeles Library, 2210 S. Peabody St.

Sequim schools

The Sequim School Board will discuss a potential future bond measure question and go over interview questions for superintendent candidates when they meet Monday.

They will meet at 6 p.m. in the district boardroom at 503 N. Sequim Ave.

Voters have rejected two construction bond proposals, one in April 2014 for $154 million and one in February, for $49.5 million.

Superintendent Kelly Shea is leaving at the end of the school year to serve as superintendent at East Valley School District in Spokane Valley.
