PORT TOWNSEND — An extended filing period will be announced for the 15 elected seats in Jefferson County that had no contenders as the weeklong filing period ended Friday.
The Jefferson County auditor is expected to announce the date of a three-day extended filing period Monday, said Elections Coordinator Betty Johnson. The extended period will apply only to the 15 offices that have no candidate filings.
Clallam County has set a special filing period May 30-June 1 for positions that drew no interest.
Of those 15 positions, four are director-at-large positions in the Queets/Clearwater School District. In the Brinnon School District, the director-at-large Position 1 seat is still up for grabs.
No candidates have filed for the Clearwater Fire District’s three open commissioner positions.
Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District No. 1 is also looking for a candidate for commissioner, Position 2, and the Paradise Bay Water District commissioner Position 1 is also without a candidate.
The Brinnon Park and Recreation District also has no candidates filings for any of the five commissioner positions. This isn’t the first time Brinnon has struggled to fill these two-year-term positions: Commissioner Positions 2 and 4 have both been vacant since the 2015 election.
Seven open positions gained candidates Friday.
David Dickson filed for re-election for West Jefferson County Hospital District commissioner Position 1, and Carol Young filed for re-election as commissioner Position 3.
Giancarlo Buonpane filed as the only candidate for commissioner Position 4 for the Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District No. 1 and Brinnon Water District No. 2 commissioner Position 2 was filed for by incumbent Barbara Schurman.
Terry Wood of Sequim filed as the only candidate for Gardiner Cemetery District commissioner, Position 3.
The Coyle-Thorndyke Parks and Recreation District race saw a bit of a shakeup: Dennis Schmitt and Larry Robinson both filed earlier in the week for the commissioner Position 2; however, on Friday, Robinson dropped out of that race and filed for commissioner Position 3, a office that had had no candidate up until then.
The Chimacum School District has some contested races with Ron Riggle filing for director of District 1. He will be up against incumbent Sarah Martin, who filed for re-election Tuesday.
Also in the Chimacum School District, Wilma Hackman filed as the third candidate for the already contested race for director of District 5. She will be campaigning against Jared Shepherd and Jack McKay. All three candidates are new candidates for that position.
In the Sequim School District, Jon Kirshbaum filed as the third candidate for the director for district two. Dan Nelson and Brian Kuh both also filed for that position Monday.
In the Quilcene Fire District, Wayne Siscoe filed Friday for commissioner Position 1 and will be campaigning against incumbent Art Frank.
In Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District No. 1, Dustin Kraft filed Friday to challenge incumbent Jodi Riker for commissioner Position 1.
If three or more candidates file for any position, the race will be on the Aug. 1 primary ballot, with the top two vote-getters going to general election.
The race for Clallam-Jefferson Fire Protection District No. 3, commissioner Position 2, became a three-way race Friday with Sean Ryan and Robert Porrazzo both filing. Steven Chinn had filed for that position Monday.
