PORT ANGELES — A third Peninsula Daily News video camera (video from the other two can be found on separate links off the home page) illustrates the excitement and then disappointment shared by onlookers when Monday’s explosion at the base of the 175-foot smokestack failed to topple the stack.
At least 2,000 people took vantage points on the west side of downtown Port Angeles to view the scheduled blast and falling of the smokestack. One of the more popular viewpoints was atop the bluff along Third Street opposite the site of the former Peninsula Plywood mill.

“Very anticlimactic,” said one bluff onlooker when the 3:30 p.m. blast failed to topple the stack and onlookers realized that it wasn’t going to fall.
The blast did expose rebar (reinforcement steel), and crews armed with saws, cutting torches and a hydraulic jack toppled the stack 2 hours and 13 minutes later.
