PORT TOWNSEND — Moving quickly to beat stormy weather, work is set next week to repair about 300 feet of the severely wave-damaged breakwater protecting Port Townsend Boat Haven marina.
After declaring the situation an emergency last week, Port of Port Townsend commissioners on Wednesday approved an $88,000 contract for Kiewit-General Construction Co. to reinforce the breakwater with rock.
Because the project costs less than $200,000, it did not have to go out for bids, Port officials said. Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and city of Port Townsend permits were “fast-tracked” and have been secured.
“We hope to start next week,” said Jim Pivarnik, Port deputy director.
Pivarnik said Glacier Northwest’s Mats Mats rock quarry would have to be reopened to produce the rock.
The rock will be barged in and set with a crane by Kiewit-General, said Pivarnik, adding that the project is expected to take three days to complete.
