PORT ANGELES — Democrats Rose Ann Carroll and Judy Maves-Klatt have contributed or loaned thousands of their own dollars in their race to succeed Jefferson County Auditor Donna Eldridge in the Nov. 4 general election, according to their state Public Disclosure Commission filings.
Carroll, 64, the county deputy-auditor chief accountant, has raised $18,297, generating 12 donations contributing $15,000 in savings to her own campaign according to Oct. 13 filings.
The Port Townsend resident also has donated $1,259 in in-kind contributions to her campaign for candidate filing fees and such items as newspaper advertisements and food, plates and napkins for a campaign meet-and-greet.
She also spent $500 for a campaign rally at the Highway 20 Road House in Port Townsend.
She also advertised in the Kitsap Sun daily newspaper of Bremerton to better reach Port Ludlow residents, she said.
Maves-Klatt, 52, owner of MK Appraisal Services, has raised $20,553 from 88 contributions, including $8,200 from Jefferson County Democrats, and spent $12,806.
Maves-Klatt has infused her campaign with a $5,000 personal loan and used donations to pay herself back $4,000 of the loan beginning with $2,000 on Aug. 7, two days after the primary election, and another $2,000 Sept. 24, more than a month before the general election.
“We reviewed our budget for expected remaining expenses and determined we had sufficient funds remaining to pay back that portion of the loan,” Maves-Klatt said.
“I informed my team that if there were additional or unexpected expenses, that I would be willing to put that money back into the campaign.”
She has sent out two fundraising letters.
Postage and advertising have been her greatest expense, Maves-Klatt said.
Carroll said Monday she is “not actively asking people for money” but has mailed fundraising appeals to county employees and Democratic Party precinct officers.
“I have managed to finance my campaign as much as possible,” said Carroll, adding she has used savings to bolster her election efforts.
“I feel citizens and taxpayers have enough on their plate.”
Carroll said she has been endorsed by retiring county Auditor and Republican Donna Eldridge and former Treasurer Judy Morris, as well as former county Assessor Jack Westerman, a Democrat.
Carroll said she considers herself “a lifetime Democrat” and joined the Jefferson County Democrats in May, around the same time she filed for the position.
“They have the right to do whatever they want,” Carroll said of the group’s support of her opponent.
Maves-Klatt has been a member of the group for “a few years,” Maves-Klatt said.
The $8,200 contribution is more than twice the $4,000 the group gave to Democratic county commissioner candidate Kathleen Kler, who is running against Republican Daniel Toepper.
County Democratic Party Chairman George Yount did not return a call for comment late Monday afternoon.
“The way I see it is that it really represents small contributions made by many people through their fundraising efforts,” Maves-Klatt said.
“The amount of support you get from a community shows in contributions.”
Ballots for the election were mailed to voters Wednesday.

New filings should be available today, Public Disclosure Commission spokeswoman Lori Anderson said Monday.
