PORT ANGELES — Residents can see and hear the city’s plans for the replacing the Eighth Street bridges and provide any final comments at an open house set for 4:30 p.m. today in the council chambers at City Hall, 321 E. Fifth St.
“We’ve talked to the community and now we are providing them with where we are going with this project,” said City Engineer Gary Kenworthy.
“We will be telling people what to expect and taking in any concerns.
“If anyone has any last comments, we’d like to hear them.”
The city is planning to replace the two seven-decade-old trestle-like bridges above Valley and Tumwater creeks.
The estimated project cost of up to $20 million is being paid almost entirely by state grants.
In June 2004, the City Council selected steel over concrete for construction materials. The council had selected a slant-leg design the previous March.
The tentative project schedule includes construction beginning late this summer and completed by the autumn of next year.
Construction issues
Issues to be addressed this afternoon will include the construction timeframe and methods, road closures, detours, parking, business and resident effects, and noise.
A formal presentation is set for 6 p.m., followed by a question and answer session.
The public will be able to review project exhibits and meet with staff members from the city and project consultant Exeltech Consulting of Olympia.
