Structure fire in Port Hadlock; brush fire in Port Townsend

PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Fire Rescue firefighters were kept busy Thursday morning with two unrelated fires in the district, one in Port Hadlock and one in Port Townsend.

A few minutes after midnight, neighbors called 911 dispatchers reporting flames coming from a single-wide mobile home on Stevens Street in Port Hadlock, EJFR said in a press release.

Crews were on scene within eight minutes of the call to find a well-involved structure with flames through the roof, the release said.

Nobody was home at the time of the fire.

Firefighters kept the flames confined to the original structure as they extinguished the fire. Crews stayed on the site through the rest of the early morning hours to keep watch for hot spots.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

In addition to on-duty firefighters, the response was supported by the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office, Engine 91 from Indian Island and “our incredible cohort of volunteers,” EJFR said.

Crews had just finished their cleanup from the structure fire when they were dispatched to a vegetation fire at the end of Eddy Street in Port Townsend at about 6 a.m. Thursday.

Two fire engines arrived to find a 100-foot by 20-foot fire in the underbrush, the release said.

The fire was brought under control within six minutes of crews arriving, according to EJFR.

Crews were still mopping up the area Thursday morning.

“The vegetation was actively burning in the cool, moist conditions this morning, reminding all of us that the brush is ready to burn,” said Fire Chief Bret Black.

The cause of that fire also is under investigation.
