PORT TOWNSEND — East Jefferson Fire-Rescue extinguished a boiler fire at the Commanding Officers Quarters of Fort Worden.
At 9:34 a.m. Tuesday, a maintenance worker noticed smoke in the chimney and was able to enter to the basement and shut off the boiler before the room filled with smoke, according to a press release from East Jefferson Fire-Rescue (EJFR).
The diesel boiler was recently renovated and the cause of the fire is still under investigation.
EJFR had to use a Class A fire extinguisher, as water would have spread the petroleum-based fire.
Fire Chief James Walkowski cautioned the public to be careful with the arrival of colder weather.
“As we enter the winter heating season, it is important for all homeowners to have their chimneys cleared of creosote and inspect their heating equipment for safe operation,” Walkowski said.
