Clallam County officials expect soon to demolish three of four homes acquired through a federally funded land buyout program that will restore the Dungeness River’s mouth to its natural floodplain habitat.
One of the four Rivers End Road homes is being considered for relocation as affordable housing, said Cathy Lear, county salmon recovery planner.
“Clallam Housing Authority is interested in one of the homes for affordable housing, and because it would be easy to move,” Lear said.
The county has targeted 30 parcels in its proposed buyout of willing Rivers End property owners.
So far, escrows have closed on seven parcels with the four homes, totaling about five acres, Lear said.
The purchases have been made through a $1.2 million in grants from various agencies.
An additional $967,500 grant from the U.S. Department of Fish and Wildlife has been secured for additional property acquisition and restoration, said Lear.
That brings county buyout funds to about $2.15 million.
