Dungeness-farmed produce goes online

SEQUIM — Forty-seven households are hungry.

Not just for any old food. They want fresh, local eggs, poultry and produce, or else they wouldn’t have logged on to www.SequimLocallyGrown.net, Sequim’s edible version of Amazon.com.

This is an online farmers’ market and a kind of matchmaker for growers and eaters, said Sid Maroney, the Sequim activist orchestrating the Web site.

Weeks after Maroney and his wife, Laura, first put the word out about LocallyGrown.net, they’ve attracted nearly four dozen households of would-be shoppers.

Also on the site are a half-dozen small-scale farmers, ranging from Barbara Richmond, who offers eggs and lavender from her farm on Sequim Bay, to Olympic Pastured Poultry, which offers organic chicken.

So there you have your breakfast and your dinner entree.

LocallyGrown.net also has carrots from Nash’s Organic Produce and green-salad mix from Nouveau Farm.

For tea and seasoning, Teri Crockett is selling her fresh spearmint.

All sellers state on the site that they use no synthetic chemicals on their products, and all are in or close to Sequim.

The goal here, Maroney said, is to provide a local organic food supply for people who’d rather not drive from farm stand to farm stand or visit the Sequim Open Aire Market every Saturday.

“I got an e-mail this morning from a mother of three who wants to buy locally, but she has trouble finding the time to go to the different farms. Placing orders online is a huge plus,” Maroney added.

Food shoppers can go to LocallyGrown.net any Monday or Tuesday, click on the produce they want and then pick it up at the Sequim Prairie Grange Hall, 290 Macleay Road between 4:30 p.m. and 7 p.m. on Thursdays.

Complete information about buying and selling on the site will be posted on LocallyGrown.net, Maroney said.
