Driver killed in wreck near Joyce

JOYCE – A Port Angeles man died after he crashed into a telephone pole and a tree stump on state Highway 112 on Wednesday.

Todd J. McGarvie, 46, was driving a 2001 Ford F250 pickup west on state Highway 112 about two miles west of Joyce at about 10:45 p.m. when he crossed the center lane.

He crashed into a telephone pole, continued west on the eastbound shoulder and then crashed into a large old-growth tree stump.

McGarvie, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was ejected from the pickup to the eastbound shoulder of the highway, according to State Patrol written statement.

No one else was in the car during the single-car wreck.

A curve and slight downgrade near milepost 49 could have been a factor, the State Patrol said.

A toxicology test will determine if alcohol was a factor in the crash, the State Patrol said.

In 2005, Port Angeles police waited for 11 hours outside McGarvie’s home on West Sixth St., after a caller reported that McGarvie had said he was taking 100 methadone pills and would kill any responder who attempted to stop him, according to police reports then.

When a SWAT team entered the residence, McGarvie was found unconscious on the floor, and he was flown to Harborview Medical Center in Seattle.

His death on Wednesday is not believed to be intentional, the State Patrol said.
