Driver could see charges after Carlsborg wreck sends one to hospital

SEQUIM — A vehicle passenger was transported to Harborview Medical Center with a spinal injury Saturday night after a crash south of Carlsborg in which the driver was arrested for investigation of driving under the influence and other charges.

Justin Thompson-Petersen was in satisfactory condition Monday at the Seattle hospital, spokeswoman Susan Gregg said.

Thompson-Petersen, whose age and city of residence were unavailable, suffered a spinal process fracture, according to an arrest report for the driver, Markus Randal Petersen.

Petersen, 22, is related to Thompson-Petersen, Clallam County Undersheriff Brian King said Monday.

Justin Thompson-Petersen was in the front passenger seat when Markus Petersen crashed the car Saturday evening while driving north on the 800 block of Hooker Road, according to Markus Petersen’s arrest report.

Shortly after 9 p.m. Saturday, Petersen and Thompson-Petersen were found sitting in a ditch together on the west side of Hooker Road, according to the arrest report.

The Camry was flipped over on its top in the ditch and the contents of the car were strewn in the ditch and roadway.

Markus Petersen was arrested for investigation of DUI, vehicular assault, driving without an interlock device and third-degree driving while license suspended and booked without bond into the Clallam County jail at 11:16 p.m. Saturday, according to the jail roster.

Superior Court Judge Christopher Melly found probable cause Monday to arrest Markus Petersen on the charges and set a preliminary appearance for 1 p.m. Wednesday for the filing of formal charges.

The county Prosecuting Attorney’s Office requested $25,000 bail for Petersen.

Melly first set the bail, then released Petersen for one day after Petersen said he gets paid today.

Melly said he would allow Petersen to get set up for electric home monitoring and a Secure Continuous Remote Alcohol Monitoring (SCRAM) bracelet that detects alcohol in perspiration.

If Petersen is not hooked up with a SCRAM bracelet by the end of today, he must report to the jail at 6 p.m., and bail will be set at $25,000, Melly decided.
