PORT ANGELES — A sculpture that has been on display at a downtown intersection for about a month has been stolen.
The aluminum sculpture of an octopus-like sea creature, titled “Unipus,” was discovered missing Saturday, said Jan Harbick, Port Angeles Downtown Association vice president.
It was installed on a pedestal about a month ago at the corner of Front and Laurel streets as part of downtown association’s “Art on the Town” program, she said.
“I’m guessing someone took it for scrap,” Harbick said.
She said the downtown association, concerned that the small sculpture could be easily taken, had taken pains to have it placed in a high-traffic area.
The artwork was insured. Harbick said she didn’t know the name of the artist or how much the artwork is worth.
The missing sculpture isn’t the public art program’s first to be stolen.
A bronze sculpture of a cougar, titled “Olympic Cougar,” was stolen in 2001 from the same corner.
A bronze dolphin was taken from another pedestal about three or four years ago, Harbick said.
