Dorssers ready to present check for Oak Street property

PORT ANGELES — Port officials are waiting one more day for the check.

Port officials are to receive a $780,000 check today from European developer Harry Dorssers for the 1.9-acre parcel at the corner of Front and Oak streets.

The successful sale would culminate a 20-year effort to develop the waterfront property.

Dorssers had given the Port $20,000 on March 13 on behalf of his company, Monte Mare LLC, as earnest money and had six months to provide the balance of the $800,000 purchase price.

Port attorney Dave Neupert said the deal’s deadline was set at 90 days, which could be starting from the day the check was received or the day after.

But Dorssers is in town and will present the check Thursday, so the sale will go through, he said.

Dorssers said Wednesday evening he already has met with Rick Anderson about project designs, architect Steve Zenovic about soil tests and City Manager Mark Madsen about permitting and other issues.

“Now it’s time to take action,” he said.

Dorssers has met with state Department of Natural Resources officials to discuss potential future uses of the property.

DNR controls the other 2 acres of the 3.9-acre Oak Street site.

Dorssers could potentially lease the 2 acres from the state.

Dorssers intends to build a mixed residential, retail and recreational development.

Despite earlier plans for an aquatics center, later designs included only a residents-only spa or similar facility.

According to the purchase and sale agreement signed in March, Dorrsers has one year after obtaining title to apply for a building permit for the intended use or his money will be refunded and the property’s title will revert to the Port.
