Dog rescued from house fire east of Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Firefighters rescued a dog after a blaze ripped through a home on Blue Valley Road on Sunday.

Firefighter Bryce McGinley found the family pet, Koda, under a bed in the back bedroom of the home east of Port Angeles, said Marc Lawson, captain for Clallam County Fire District No. 3.

The dog was up and walking after firefighters gave him water and oxygen.

A community member donated the dog oxygen mask to the fire department about a year ago and this was the first time the department has used it.

The department keeps the canine oxygen masks on their staffed career engines.

The cause of the fire was still under investigation Sunday afternoon, but firefighters know it started on the front porch of the house, Tony Hudson, assistant chief said.

One person was home when the fire started and fled the house with one of the family’s two dogs, he said.

The owners, John and Deana McIntyre, were out of town during the fire, Lawson said.

Firefighters first responded to the call at about 10:33 a.m. When they arrived they saw the front end of the house engulfed in flames, he said.

Within about three minutes the bulk of the fire was knocked down, but it had spread into the attic. Firefighters cut holes in the roof to get at the fire and allow it to vent, he said.

“It’s a complete loss due to the heat,” he said. “Heated smoke went throughout the whole house.”

During the overhaul, firefighters were able to salvage many personal belongings and sentimental items, he said.

The fire was completely out by 11:57 a.m.
