Dog agility trials, benefits, hikes offered this weekend on North Olympic Peninsula

Agile dogs, artist presentations, benefits and hikes are among the attractions offered on the North Olympic Peninsula this weekend.

Here are some of the highlights for this weekend:

SEQUIM

All-Schools Reunion

SEQUM — The 2011 Sequim All-Schools Reunion — for all the students and teachers who have attended any schools in the Sequim School District — is this weekend.

It will begin Saturday, with a morning golf tournament at SkyRidge Golf Course at 7015 Old Olympic Highway and continue with a lunch and assembly at Sequim High School, 601 N. Sequim Ave.

Attendees can pick up name tags and packets after 9 a.m. in the school cafeteria. High school memorabilia will be on display, and a car show will be in the high school parking lot.

Lunch will be at noon, with an assembly beginning at 1:30 p.m. that features guest speakers from different graduating classes and a slide show.

Alumni can continue the party Saturday night at 7 Cedars Casino in Blyn with dinner, live music and dancing. Social hour begins at 5 p.m., and dinner is at 6 p.m.

On Sunday, the Sequim Pioneer Picnic will begin at noon at the old Macleay School, 290 Macleay Road.

Also that day, the Museum & Arts Center in the Sequim-Dungeness Valley will host an open house and book-signing event at the Dungeness Schoolhouse at 2781 Towne Road from noon to 4 p.m.

Sequim schools historian and author Irene Wyman will sign copies of her 2010 book, Clallam County Schools, East to West, and tours of the historical schoolhouse will be offered.

A Sequim schools alumni retrospective digital slide show will be shown on a running loop during the open house, and a 10-panel Sequim schools history exhibit that was showcased at Sequim High School during its centennial celebration in January will be on display.

Dog agility trials

SEQUIM — Dogs will jump, tunnel and weave through obstacle courses at the Hurricane Ridge Kennel Club’s summer agility trials today through Sunday.

The public can watch dogs compete from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. each day at the Blake family property at 110 S. Blake Ave., next to Carrie Blake Park.

Dogs will compete in novice, open and excellent classes.

Contests include the A-frame, teeter totter, dog walk, jumps, tunnels and weave poles.

Paws in the Garden

SEQUIM — Vision Landscape Nursery, 131 Kitchen-Dick Road, will hold its annual Paws in the Garden: Artists for Animals art show sale and benefit from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday and 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday.

Gem open house

CARLSBORG — The Clallam County Gem and Mineral Association will hold its annual open house from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.

The open house will be at the Lapidary Shop, 81 Hooker Road, No. 5.

Pet lover’s weekend

SEQUIM — The third annual KSQM 91.5 FM Pet Lover’s Weekend special broadcasting event will run today through Sunday.

Throughout the weekend, KSQM 91.5 FM will feature animal stories, humor, informational spots and novelty music about animals like the 1950s Patti Page hit “(How Much is) That Doggie in the Window.”

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday, KSQM 91.5 FM and more than 20 pet-loving organizations will have booths set up in the Sequim Costco Wholesale parking lot, 955 W. Washington St.

Radio station employees and volunteers will sign up folks as KSQM Pet Members for $15.

Membership includes a tag with a unique number and the station telephone number so that KSQM can help lost pets find their way back to their owners.

For every $10 contributed in honor of animals during this fundraiser event for KSQM, one pound of pet supplies will be given to the Clallam County Humane Society, Welfare for Animals Guild and Peninsula Friends of Animals.

Sale continues

SEQUIM — The Sequim Senior Activity Center has extended its sixth annual benefit sale to this weekend.

Everything will be half-price at the sale from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and Saturday at the 990 E. Washington St., Suites E104 and E105, in the Bell Creek Plaza next to QFC.

Grocery opening

SEQUIM — A grand opening celebration for Grocery Outlet, 1045 W. Washington St., will begin at 8 a.m. Saturday.

The first 500 customers will receive a Frugal Friendly bag.

Free coffee/treats will be served from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. Free face painting/caricature drawings will be from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m.

Free ice-cream floats, twisty balloons and contests will be offered from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Ten winners of a $50 Grocery Outlet gift card will be announced at noon Sunday.

Free youth flights

SEQUIM — Chapter 430 of the Experimental Aircraft Association will offer free introductory Young Eagle flights to youths 7 to 17 at Sequim Valley International Airport starting at 10 a.m. Saturday.

Minors must be accompanied by or have written permission from a parent or legal guardian.

Flights are dependent on weather conditions.

Youths will receive a free logbook with information on taking a free Sporty’s Flight Training ground school course, which is valued at $390, the association said.

Clarinet concert

SEQUIM — The Marmalades, a clarinet group, will perform at 1 p.m. Sunday.

The concert will be in the shade garden at McComb Gardens, 751 McComb Road.

Initially a study group, The Marmalades, composed of Bob Golightly, Susan Schultz and Jan Proebstel (clarinets), Signe Crawford (clarinet and alto clarinet) and Bobbie Usselman (bass clarinet), has developed into a performance ensemble.

Book discussion

SEQUIM — Cold Mountain, Charles Frazier’s Civil War novel, will be discussed at the Sequim Library, 630 N. Sequim Ave., at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Pre-registration for this program is not required, and drop-ins are welcome.

SEQUIM — Sequim Prairie Grange, 290 Macleay Road will host its last ice-cream social of the year from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

Cost of admission is $5.

Proceeds will go toward maintenance and upkeep at the grange.

Family fun fest slated

SEQUIM — Sequim Bible Church, 847 N. Sequim Ave., will host its second Family Fun Fest and first talent show from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday.

The free event includes carnival and water games, live music, food and prizes.

The talent show will begin at 5 p.m.

Concert pianist

SEQUIM — Concert pianist Calvin Taylor will perform at the Sequim Adventist Church on Saturday.

The music publisher, concert performer and recording artist will play at 11 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. at the church at 30 Sanford Lane.

Admission is free, but any offerings will go toward Taylor’s ministry. CDs will be available for purchase at the evening concert.

Winery grand opening

SEQUIM — Wind Rose Cellars, 155 W. Cedar St., Suite B, will celebrate its grand opening with food, live music and specials Saturday.

The winery is owned by winemaker David Volmut and his wife and business partner, Jennifer States, who moved here from Eastern Washington’s wine country in January.

SEQUIM — The Friends of Sequim Library will hold a book sale from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday.

Fill bus with supplies

PORT ANGELES — Fashion Bug, a women’s specialty retailer, will host a Fill the Bus event in front of its store from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday.

Fashion Bug is located at 2743 E. U.S. Highway 101 near Safeway.

Class supply lists are posted online at www.portangelesschools.org by selecting “Students” then “Back to School Information.”

Supplies collected during the Fill the Bus event will be distributed during the annual Back to School Event at Jefferson Elementary School, 218 E. 12th St., from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 20.

Additional supplies donated the remainder of August at Fashion Bug will be distributed to each district school.

Hurricane Hill walk

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Explorers Club will host a Hurricane Hill Club Walk on Saturday.

Participants will meet at the Port Angeles Red Lion Hotel lobby, 221 N. Lincoln St., at 9 a.m. before driving up to Hurricane Ridge.

The trail to Hurricane Hill gains 650 feet over 3.1 miles.

Restrooms are available at the start of the walk.

Charity football game

PORT ANGELES — The Olympic Peninsula Eagles will merge with the Kitsap County Bears to face Everett JC in a benefit for the Shane Park Playground fund Saturday.

The game will be played at Civic Field on Race Street at 7 p.m.

Admission is $5 for adults, seniors and students; 12 and younger get in free.

At halftime, children attending the YMCA/OP Eagles football camp will play a flag football game.

PAHS Class of ’71

PORT ANGELES — The Port Angeles High School Class of 1971 will hold its 40th reunion this weekend.

A social at the Peninsula Golf Club clubhouse from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. today will include appetizers, an open bar and a DVD of old photos.

The cost is $20 per person before the event and $25 at the door.

A private dinner buffet and dance will be held at the Bushwhacker Restaurant from 6 p.m. to midnight Saturday.

The cost is $40 per person in advance or $45 at the door.

A discount is available, with both events $50 per person in advance.

Faculty who worked in the Port Angeles School District from 1959 to 1971 are invited to attend the Saturday night event.

PORT ANGELES — An Angels for Dan fundraiser for Dan Spicher, who has been diagnosed with stage four nodular sclerosis Hodgkin’s lymphoma, is planned Saturday.

A car wash will be held at Les Schwab, 2527 U.S. Highway 101, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

Another fundraiser for Spicher is set Saturday, Aug. 20.

A spaghetti feed and silent auction will be held at Vern Burton Community Center, 308 W. Fourth St., from 6 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. that day.

Dental clinic

PORT ANGELES — The second Volunteers in Medicine of the Olympics — or VIMO — walk-in dental clinic will begin at 9 a.m. today.

The free clinic will be at VIMO, 909 E. Georgiana St., for low-income people from Clallam and Jefferson counties who need emergency dental service.

Volunteer dental professionals treat patients with infections or pain on a first-come, first-served basis.

No root canals or restorative work are done at the clinic.

Visiting artist speaks

PORT TOWNSEND — Goddard College presents “Gaia’s Garden, or How I Became an Ecological Artist” with guest artist Ana Flores on Saturday.

The free presentation, which will be from 7:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. in the USO Hall at Fort Worden State Park, is the next installment of Goddard’s MFA in Interdisciplinary Arts, Port Townsend Residency, Visiting Artist Series.

Flores, a Cuban-American sculptor, ecological designer and activist, will discuss her career and share her work.

Just 500 tickets will be sold for the Full Moon Festival. They’re available — only until noon today — for $25.

Widower Jim Munn will host the event, which in addition to the music will offer vendors of food, drink, art and tie-dyed T-shirts.

Unity of Effort picnic

GARDINER — State Attorney General Rob McKenna, a Republican candidate for governor, will be the guest speaker at Unity of Effort, a picnic celebration “dedicated to those that protect our way of life,” on Saturday.

The picnic will be from noon to 5 p.m. at Security Services Northwest’s Fort Discovery compound on Old Gardiner Road.

The event is limited to the first 1,500 guests. Reservations were to have been made by Aug. 1.

Krista Gunstone will open with the singing of the national anthem at 1 p.m., followed by the Army’s 56th Army Band playing patriotic music from 1:05 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

A $10 donation per adult is requested. It will go to the Special Operation Warrior Foundation.

Children younger than 18 are admitted free. There is no cost to law enforcement/first-responders and military families.

Full-moon meditation

PORT TOWNSEND — A special full-moon meditation gathering will take place at Room to Move, the uptown, upstairs yoga studio at 1008 Lawrence St., on Sunday.

The meditation will last from 6 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.. Admission is a suggested donation of $10.

Walk to remember

FORKS — The second annual “A Walk to Remember” will be held at Tillicum Park from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday.

The event is for those who have lost loved ones. It serves as a fundraiser for the Kassi Hansen Memorial Scholarship Fund.

The fund provides a scholarship to a graduating senior interested in pursuing a career in the medical field.

Hansen was killed while riding as a passenger in a drunken driving accident in March 2008.

The cost is $25 for a family, $15 for an individual with lunch available for $7.
