DISCOVERY BAY — A sign alluding to “poisonous” water contaminated with E. coli bacteria and even malaria is driving down business in Discovery Bay, business owners say.
The contaminated water is apparently confined to an individual source of water at a welding shop on the southwest side of the junction of U.S. Highway 101 and state Highway 20, the sign’s creator, Floyd Clark, said Tuesday.
But members of the community say people are assuming the water warning applies to the whole town.
The sign was erected before the Fourth of July to keep tourists from drinking the water in front of the shop, Clark said.
The sign disappeared Monday for a second time, Clark said.
There were several stories floating around the community Tuesday as to what happened it.
Clark said he has contacted the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Many people queried in Discovery Bay on Tuesday blamed the sign for a sales slump in a traditionally busy time of the year.
