Diet, sustainability top points in Port Townsend lecture May 15

PORT TOWNSEND — The author of Comfortably Unaware will discuss the role of diet in sustainability at 2 p.m. Sunday, May 15.

During the free lecture, Dr. Richard Oppenlander — the founder of Inspire Awareness Now and a restorative dentist in Portage, Mich. — will speak on “Food Choice & Sustainability — Tipping Point Realities” at the Northwest Maritime Center, 413 Water St.

A question-and-answer period will follow the lecture. Audience members will have the opportunity to have books signed and to purchase them.

Oppenlander’s book Comfortably Unaware has been endorsed by Ellen DeGeneres and Jane Goodall.

He will speak on his latest book, Food Choice and Sustainability, about inefficiencies and unsustainable practices in food production systems.

Current choices of food are causing what he calls “global depletion,” or loss of the world’s natural resources and of individuals’ health.

His work explores solutions.

On Dec. 2, 2015, Oppenlander addressed the European Parliament, said Daniel Milholland, an organizer of the Port Townsend lecture.

Oppenlander’s talk will be the third presentation in the Compassionate Living Event series, which focuses on the relationships between diet and the health of individuals and the planet.

On Sunday, June 12, Dr. Michael Klaper of Santa Rosa, Calif., will speak on “From Operating Table to Dining Table” at 2 p.m. at the Northwest Maritime Center.

The series is sponsored by the Port Townsend Food Co-op and the Port Townsend and Beyond Vegan Meet-Up Group.
