CLALLAM BAY — A leaky underground diesel pipe was being repaired Friday by a team of Clallam Bay Corrections Center technicians, said Sandra Carter, superintendent at the prison.
The repairs were being made after staff members noticed a wet spot growing on a paved surface on April 21.
Prison staff soon identified that the wet stain stemmed from a broken pipe that normally carried diesel fuel to an upper-floor boiler.
“There was no pool of [diesel] or anything like that,” Carter said.
“Whatever leaked there was soaked into the soil.”
Carter stressed that the extent of contamination is limited to some soil around the faulty pipe — all of which will be removed once they determine how much of it has been soaked with diesel.
“We verified that there was no contamination to any of the water or storm drains,” Carter said.
“We isolated and contained the [affected] area.”
