PORT ANGELES — Police are investigating a shooting death that occurred in a house near Port Angeles High School on Monday afternoon.
Officers and detectives found a 63-year-old man dead inside the house at 211 E. Vashon Ave. — one block north of the high school — at about 1:25 p.m., Detective Sgt. Tyler Peninger said Monday night.
Authorities had been alerted by the resident, who told a 9-1-1 dispatcher that he had been involved in a shooting with a neighbor.
Neither the resident nor the shooting victim was identified by authorities.
KOMO-TV reported Monday night that the 9-1-1 caller, a 58-year-old man, said his neighbor was visiting when the two got into an argument. When the argument took a violent turn, the caller said he shot his neighbor in self-defense.
Peninger said there were no suspects at large, and detectives are continuing their investigation.
“We’re going to have the county prosecutor, also the coroner, at the scene tomorrow,” said Deputy Police Chief Brian Smith.
“We’re not calling it anything right now. They haven’t arrested anybody. There’s no indication that it was a suicide.”
Authorities said the person who reported the incident is known to police, who were working to secure the scene on Monday night.
“When we have more figured out, we’ll be more definitive,” Smith said.
He said it is “way too premature” to rule out whether a crime occurred.
“Everybody being investigated is cooperating,” Smith added.
“We’ll have more to talk about tomorrow.”
KOMO reported that the caller’s 20-year-old daughter was home at the time of the shooting. She was not injured.
