Demolition begins for Port Angeles Boat Haven redevelopment project

PORT ANGELES – The demolition of floats has begun in the Port Angeles Boat Haven redevelopment project, said Jeff Robb, the port’s airport and marinas manager.

Additional boats have been moved out of the marina to the port fill dump on Marine Drive to allow the project to continue, he told Port of Port Angeles commissioners this week.

Robb said Feb. 15 would be the final date for piledriving this year because of the fish migration windows.

After then, electrical and other work can begin, he said on Monday.

The $5.53 million project will be completed in mid-March 2009.

The first phase, to be completed in March 2008, will include renovation of most of the 533-slip marina’s east end, including replacement of utilities, pilings and floats C through H and float O, and replacement of the tidal grid.

The second phase will include replacement of utilities, pilings and floats A and B plus I through L on the west end.

The slips also could be reconfigured to accommodate larger boats.

Port commissioners awarded the project contract to Bergerson Construction Inc. of Astoria, Ore., at their May 14 meeting.

To finance the project, the Port of Port Angeles began a five-year series of moorage rate increases in January 2006 that will raise those fees by an average of 87 percent, and sold a $5 million, 20-year bond in April 2006.

Robb told the commissioners at their Aug. 27 meeting that the contractor’s plan a month ago was to finish the project by March 2008.

But a shortage of steel pilings and another project that Bergerson is doing at the port’s Terminal 1 means the Boat Haven project now will last two construction seasons, he said.
