PORT ANGELES — A man accused of driving drunk when he caused a head-on wreck that killed an Ahousat, B.C., man in August is mulling a plea offer that would lead to a five-year prison sentence.
Steven W. Boyd, 48, appeared in Clallam County Superior Court for a status hearing Friday.
Defense attorney Alex Stalker said his client needed more time to think over a plea offer from Deputy Prosecuting Attorney John Troberg.
“He’d be looking at five years,” Stalker said.
Clallam County Superior Court Judge Ken Williams granted Stalker’s request for a one-week continuance.
“Obviously, it’s an important decision for you to make,” Williams told Boyd.
Boyd is being held in the Clallam County jail on $50,000 bail.
He is charged with vehicular homicide and two counts of vehicular assault in the Aug. 25 death of Darrell E.
Campbell on state Highway 112 west of Port Angeles.
Campbell was the front-seat passenger in a Ford Ranger that was struck head-on by an Isuzu Rodeo driven by Boyd near Place Road west of Port Angeles.
Campbell was on a trip from Canada to Neah Bay.
Two other people in the pickup were injured.
The State Patrol said Boyd had a 0.12 percent blood-alcohol level from a blood sample taken 95 minutes after the wreck and a 0.079 percent blood-alcohol level taken from a portable Breathalyzer about two hours after the wreck.
The legal limit in Washington is 0.08 percent.
A one-week trial is set to begin April 2.
