QUILCENE — A deer on U.S. Highway 101 caused a small car to swerve into a ditch and overturn Saturday afternoon.
State Patrol troopers said the 2000 Volkswagen Beetle sedan driven by Selina C. Bell, 20, of Olympia slid off the road, hit the roadside ditch and overturned 10 feet off the highway after Bell swerved to avoid hitting the deer.
The mishap, which sent Bell to Jefferson Healthcare hospital in Port Townsend for unspecified injuries, occurred on U.S. 101 near Crocker Lake, about 8 miles north of Quilcene, shortly after 2 p.m.
Bell was wearing her seat belt, a trooper reported from the scene, but may have been traveling too fast for the conditions.
