Day of Caring project kicks off United Way fundraising campaign in Clallam County

Volunteers will paint and clean up during Day of Caring projects in Forks, Clallam Bay-Sekiu, Port Angeles and Sequim on Saturday.

The projects also will kick off the Clallam County United Way’s 2010-2011 fundraising campaign, which has a goal of $1 million.

The fundraising campaign chairman is Port Angeles Fire Chief Dan McKeen.

Sept. 11 has been named the National Day of Service. Forks, Clallam Bay-Sekiu, Port Angeles and Sequim all have one or more Day of Caring activities organized by United Way’s Jack and Pam Marshall on Saturday.

Many companies are gathering a corps of volunteers and adopting projects; community volunteers are welcome to join in the fun.

Each project will begin with a moment of silence to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

In addition, Sequim residents will hold a brief remembrance service at the flag pole at 815 W. Washington St. at 7:30 a.m.

Community members are invited to attend the remembrance program whether they plan to volunteer or not.

Port Angeles:

Volunteer opportunities begin at 9 a.m. on Saturday and Sunday.

Volunteers will paint several downstairs rooms at Healthy Families Rose House, 531 E. Fifth St.

Painting projects also are planned at Peninsula Community Mental Health’s Horizon Center, 205 E. Fifth St.; at four Serenity House apartments at 2201 W. 18th St., and at a low-income seniors home.

Landscaping will occur at St. Andrew’s Place, 520 E. Park Ave.

Francis Street Park, at the north end of Francis Street and Valley Creek Estuary Park., will be picked up and weeded.

For information or to register for a Port Angeles project, phone Jody Moss, United Way executive director, at 360-457-3011.

Sequim:

Volunteers will meet at the Sequim Transit Center, 190 W. Cedar St at 7:30 a.m. before heading to project sites.

United Way volunteer project sites are the Boys & Girls Club, 400 W. Fir St.; First Teacher Playground, corner of North Third Avenue and West Alder Street; Sequim Food Bank, 144 W. Alder St. and Carrie Blake Park, 202 N. Blake Ave.

Other Sequim Day of Service projects include painting fire hydrants and weeding landscaping strips.

After the workday, volunteers will be welcomed at a 3 p.m. potluck sponsored by Costco and Walmart at the Port of Port Angeles’ John Wayne Marine banquet room, 2577 W. Sequim Bay Road.

Coordinators for Sequim projects are Sequim city employees Bobbie Usselman and Karen Kuznek-Reese.
