PORT ANGELES — A 2005 Port Angeles High school graduate is in a coma in a Spokane Hospital after sustaining a serious head injury last month.
Lonee Schoenfeldt, 19, is the daughter of George Schoenfeldt, a Port of Port Angeles commissioner, and Ellen Schoenfeldt.
The sophomore at Washington State University in Pullman slipped on steps while leaving a school function Oct. 28 and hit her head on concrete.
She has not regained consciousness since.
Her parents have been staying in a motel near Sacred Heart Medical Center since the day after Lonee’s injuries.
George said Friday that Lonee was in critical condition.
She entered a coma after the injury, and then doctors put her into a medically induced coma to allow the pressure inside her skull to go down, George said.
If the pressure in Lonee’s skull remains low, doctors will attempt to bring her out of the coma this week, he said.
It won’t be known if Lonee has suffered long-term damage until she wakes up.
Fall after Cougars game
Lonee had attended a televised viewing of a Cougars away game and was on her way to meet her boyfriend when she fell.
A trained EMT walking in front of her saw her fall and was able to give immediate aid, George said.
Lonee was wearing a Halloween costume at the time and did not have identification on her.
Another student in the emergency room at the hospital happened to recognize her and was able to give hospital staff enough clues to track down her parents.
“I’m so thankful for that,” George said.
