Crowd gathers for community snowball fight in Port Angeles

PORT ANGELES — Snowballs flew at the Peninsula Golf Club on Sunday as more than 30 people of all ages gathered for an impromptu community snowball fight — and it all started with a post on Facebook.

Smiles were everywhere as kids and adults took cover behind makeshift snow forts and trees before returning fire.

“It’s an excuse just to get the community together,” said organizer Deidra Delgado.

“We don’t have to know each other, but here we are getting together just because.”

She took inspiration from a snowball fight that hundreds of people participated in at Wright Park in Tacoma on Saturday.

Delgado said she grew up in that area and seeing her old community having some fun made her want to bring the event to Port Angeles.

She saw that a single Facebook post could bring people together for a day of snow-filled fun, so she created a Facebook event.

“I was inspired — I had to,” she said as she dodged snowballs mid-interview. “Port Angeles is awesome and this makes me a little less homesick.”

Among those who attended was Lindsey Mike, who said it was the first chance she has had to play in the snow this winter.

“It was a lot of fun,” she said. “It’s good to see everybody get together and do the same thing and laugh together while we’re doing it.”

Mike said her next goal was to go sledding.

“It’s good to see young and older,” she said. “We’re all just enjoying the same thing.”

She said the community would benefit by there being more events like the one that happened Sunday.
