JOYCE — A four-year maintenance and operations tax levy for Crescent School District was well on its way to victory Tuesday night after 680 ballots were tallied.
The levy was passing by 62.35 percent, or 424 votes, against 37.65 percent, or 256, no votes.
Because the election was combined with the presidential primary, it is unknown how many ballots in the Crescent School District area remain to be counted.
The next count will be done on Friday at 4:30 p.m., County Auditor Patty Rosand said.
She said the remaining ballots would not likely change the results of the election, which requires a simple majority to pass.
School levies previously were passed by a 60 percent supermajority, but voters statewide approved a measure last November allowing school levies to pass by 50 percent plus one vote.
Crescent’s is the first school levy on the North Olympic Peninsula subject to the new lighter requirements.
In Crescent’s last levy election four years ago, the district achieved a supermajority by only three votes, Superintendent Tom Anderson said.
“This time we’re passing by a whole lot more than three votes,” he said as he gazed at the results Tuesday night.
