PORT TOWNSEND — No one will be charged in a BMW car crash that led to a fire with flames 8-to-10-feet tall on early Christmas morning, according to the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office.
Because law enforcement will not seek charges, Jefferson County Sheriff’s Capt. Mike Stringer declined to identify the driver.
The driver fled the scene after the crash at about 4:30 a.m. at the intersection of Beckett Point Road and Marrakech Circle, but was later interviewed by law enforcement, Stringer said.
Stringer said he did not know the cause of the wreck of the car, described by East Jefferson Fire-Rescue spokesman Bill Beezley as a gray 5-Series BMW that had been modified.
No investigation is underway and no charges are pending because no one was injured and the only property damage was to the driver’s own vehicle, Stringer said.
Neighbors near the scene of the wreck told East Jefferson Fire-Rescue personnel that they heard a crash and then pounding on their front door as a man yelled for help.
By the time they got to the door, the man had left, but they could see flames they estimated at 8-feet-to-10-feet high from the road, Beezley said.
Firefighters found the car ablaze when they arrived at 4:34 a.m., Beezley said.
After knocking down the fire, they found that there was no one in the vehicle, Beezley said.
