PORT ANGELES — A vehicle collided with a utility pole Tuesday morning on Tumwater Truck Route, igniting a small fire and leaving a 79-year-old woman with leg and chest injuries.
Jeanne Johnson of Port Angeles was listed in stable condition Tuesday evening at Olympic Medical Center, 939 Caroline St.
She was transported to the hospital following the collision.
Johnson was northbound down the truck route hill at about 11 a.m. when her 1990 Buick LeSabre struck a power pole and knocked down a transmission line near the intersection of Marine Drive, police Sgt. Eric Kovatch said.
“Initially there was a fire under the hood of her vehicle that was put out by a passerby,” he said.
The collision is also believed to have caused a small grass fire nearby — a transformer in the power system failed as a result of the crash, authorities said.
The grass fire was initially reported burning up hill from the truck route, prompting police to close the truck route and surrounding areas for about an hour.
Power was restored to nearby businesses by early afternoon.
Officers do not know what caused the collision, Kovatch said.
