PORT ANGELES — A fire possibly started from a barbecue grill on a porch destroyed a house early Monday.
The house, 1218 W. 11th St., was engulfed in flames when firefighters arrived at about 1:45 a.m..
Occupants Mike and Peggy Western were already outside when firefighters arrived, but their small dog was still inside.
Firefighters later found the dog alive and brought it to safety.
The couple were taken to Olympic Medical Center to be treated for smoke inhalation and minor trauma and then discharged, Fire Marshal Ken Dubuc said.
“It was incredible because looking at that structure, you wouldn’t think there was any way that anything that was inside could survive,” Dubuc said.
Dubuc said the fire might have started in the barbecue grill.
“We aren’t sure yet, but that is where it seems to have started,” he said.
“I haven’t talked to the owners yet, but from what I’ve seen so far it doesn’t look suspicious in any way.
“The cause seems fairly obvious at this point.”
