SEQUIM — Residents are closer to having two of the largest retailers in the arts and craft and beauty industries right in their backyard.
Construction started one month ago on a 30,000-square-foot building valued at more than $3 million that will house a Michaels and Ulta Beauty between Ross Dress for Less and The Home Depot at the Sequim Village Marketplace, 1145 W. Washington St.
“We will be delivering the space to [Michaels and Ulta on] April 1, 2018,” said Jenny Gage, vice president and asset manager of Washington Capital Management Inc., the investment adviser to the pension trust that owns the center.
The building permits for the space were filed Nov. 1, 2016, and were pending as of February of this year as company officials waited for internal approvals to begin construction.
Gage said Washington Capital, on behalf of its clients, will deliver the new space to the businesses, and her guess is Michaels will open within a month or two of that date and Ulta could open in July or August.
Ulta will be 10,000 square feet and Michaels will be 17,900 square feet.
“We are very excited to have these two national retailers in Sequim, and they should bring in a lot of traffic,” Gage said.
Michaels is the largest arts and crafts retailer in the United States, while Ulta Beauty is the largest beauty retailer in the U.S.
Michaels’ website said the company operates 1,262 stores worldwide as of Jan. 31, 2015, and Ulta operates 974 stores in 48 states and the District of Columbia as of Jan. 27 of this year.
Gage said Washington Capital owns most of the pads in the shopping center except for Costco, The Home Depot and First Federal, and builds and leases the pads as part of an investment for local building tradesmen’s retirement funds.
Michaels and Ulta representatives were not available for comment.
